Microfiltration (MF) is a pressure-driven membrane filtration process that separates particles and microorganisms from liquids. It uses membranes with pore sizes typically ranging from 0.1 to 10 micrometers, allowing water and dissolved substances to pass through while retaining larger particles.
How Microfiltration Works
- Membrane Filtration: Water or other liquid is forced through the MF membrane under pressure
- Particle Retention: Particles larger than the membrane pores are retained on the membrane surface or within the membrane matrix
- Filtrate: The filtered liquid, now free from suspended particles, is called the filtrate
- Concentrate: The retained particles are collected as the concentrate
- Cleaning/Backwashing: Periodic cleaning or backwashing is required to remove accumulated particles and maintain membrane performance
