Understanding Mixed Bed Deionization
Mixed bed deionization is a water purification process that uses a combination of cation and anion exchange resins packed together in a single column. This process effectively removes dissolved minerals, salts, and other impurities, producing water with extremely high purity, often measured in megohms-cm resistivity.
How Mixed Bed Deionizers Work
- Resin Bed: The mixed bed contains both cation and anion exchange resins, intimately mixed to maximize the exchange process
- Ion Exchange: As water flows through the resin bed, cations (positively charged ions) are exchanged for hydrogen ions (H+) by the cation resin, while anions (negatively charged ions) are exchanged for hydroxide ions (OH-) by the anion resin
- Water Purity: The H+ and OH- ions combine to form pure water (H2O), resulting in highly purified, deionized water
- Regeneration: Once the resins are exhausted, they are regenerated using acid and caustic solutions to replenish the exchange capacity
