Media filtration is a water treatment process that uses a bed of filter media to remove suspended particles and impurities from water. As water flows through the media bed, the particles are trapped within the media, resulting in cleaner, clearer water.
How Media Filtration Works
- Media Bed: The filter bed consists of various layers of media, typically sand, gravel, and anthracite coal, arranged from fine to coarse
- Filtration Process: Water enters the top of the filter and flows down through the media bed. Suspended particles are trapped by the media through a combination of straining, interception, and adhesion
- Backwashing: Over time, the media bed becomes clogged with trapped particles. The filter is then backwashed by reversing the flow of water, flushing the accumulated particles out of the system
