A water softener is a water treatment system that removes hardness minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, from water. These minerals cause hard water problems, such as:
- Scale buildup in pipes and appliances
- Dry skin and hair
- Spotty dishes and glassware
- Reduced lathering of soap and shampoo
- Increased energy costs due to scale buildup
How a Water Softener Works
- Ion Exchange: Water softeners use ion exchange resin beads that are negatively charged. Hardness minerals, which are positively charged, are attracted to the resin. As hard water flows through the resin tank, the minerals are exchanged for sodium ions, effectively softening the water
- Regeneration: Over time, the resin beads become saturated with hardness minerals. The softener then goes through a regeneration cycle, flushing the minerals out of the tank with a brine solution (salt water). The resin is then recharged with sodium ions, ready to soften more water
